Welcome....
Welcome to my site dedicated to my exhibition poultry; Faverolles, Frizzles & Turkeys.
About me
My obsession with poultry began at a young age – my first memory of poultry being chasing the Marans around the orchard at every available opportunity and collecting their lovely brown eggs (it’s a wonder they were still laying after their enforced laps of the orchard most days!)
I got my own hens proper in 1993 at the young age of eight, starting off with a cross bred broody and her 5 day-old chicks.
Pure breed exhibition poultry soon followed with the help of local poultry breeders – people I now regard as good friends. My first foray in to exhibiting poultry was in August 1999 at Millom & Broughton Agricultural Society show, where the exhibition ‘bug’ well and truly bit after my bird “Vera” a Silver Laced Wyandotte bantam gained first prize in her class. Since then many breeds have passed through my sheds including; Leghorns, Polands, Belgians, Sussex & Anconas to name a few.
16 years later I have settled upon what I consider to be two of the most stunning breeds, but also two of the lesser-known and under-represented breeds. The Faverolles and Frizzles.
When it comes to breeding poultry, I always aim towards that elusive perfect bird, the challenge of working towards the standard, is for me one of the most exciting things about keeping exhibition poultry, showing them off is merely the icing on the cake. I breed and exhibit poultry because I love the breeds I keep.
Turkeys arrived in 2001 and have made a lasting impression, so much so I can’t imagine never having them around.
I have written a series of articles on the history, breeds and keeping of turkeys in Country Smallholding magazine, been interviewed by Farmers weekly and written a piece for the official journal of the Poultry & Pigeon Association of New Zealand. In an aim to raise awareness of these wonderful birds as more than Christmas dinner.
The aim of this website is to give you the opportunity to see these wonderful birds and hopefully strike up some interest in the breeds I keep and love. If you would like to find out more about my birds, please don’t hesitate to get in touch through the ‘contact’ section and I will get back to you as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours).
I hope you enjoy looking at my birds,
Benjamin
